Karamara Primary Public School is located in the Abenet (Mercato) district of Addis Ababa. The school has 1800 students from 1st through 8th grade. This large school is situated in the heart of one of the most deprived areas of the city. The Mercato is reputed to be the largest open air market in Africa and is teeming with people and activity at all times of day.
On a visit to the school during 2011 to deliver pencil cases and researching other projects to fundraise for, we were visiting during break time after lunch and noticed that the kindergarten students aged 5 and 6 were so exhausted that they were falling asleep at their desks or in their chairs. When we commented on this we were told that the school did not have the funds to purchase the foam mattresses and mats for the kids to be able to properly rest although they did have the space set within a classroom… And the families of these children were unable to contribute in any way either with funds or bedding – in most cases the children would be sleeping with other family members on one single mattress in these homes.
PPC used funds to order and purchase mattresses and mats to help alleviate this problem and had the new bedding delivered to the school. On that same day these children were able to rest much more comfortably and be able to continue afternoon lessons more refreshed and alert than before.
